An unusual guest Paramedic treats an unusual patient at Washington School Fun Day

MANCHESTER — On June 11, 2012 a Paramedic crew from the Ambulance Service of Manchester attended Washington School’s Annual “Fun Day”. The Manchester elementary school and the PTA hold the event to celebrate the close of each school year.

ASM’s Vinnie Maston and Jason Bak were a hit last year, autographing ASM coloring books for the students and giving tours of the ambulance. This year Vinnie, a Supervisor and Paramedic returned with fellow Supervisor and Paramedic Mike Panciera.

Representatives from Manchester Police Department and Manchester Fire Rescue EMS were on hand to round out the public safety services in Manchester.

ASM’s Alpha Five: Volume 3: Don Hart

STAFFORD SPRINGS — Beth Van Alstyne, Director of Critical Care Services for Johnson Memorial Medical Center in Stafford Springs, wrote a complimentary endorsement for ASM’s Don Hart. ASM’s Beth Sheils is Lead Instructor for Capital Community College Paramedic Program

HARTFORD – As of January 11, 2012 Ambulance Service of Manchester’s Beth Sheils became Capital Community College’s Paramedic Program lead instructor for the night program. In this role, Beth leads didactic instruction for the 18-month program, guiding 20 paramedic students through extensive education and training in the delivery of emergency medical care.

Beth is a Paramedic Supervisor for ASM. She has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Mount Holyoke College and a Masters in Public Health from the Boston University School of Public Health, and is herself a graduate of the Capital Community College Paramedic Program. Continue reading →

Hello Family and Friends. It has always been a goal of mine to do a triathlon for a good cause. And this year, I am swimming, biking and running to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training (TNT).

I have committed myself to raise $800 by June 10th, 2012 for this incredible organization that leads the way in funding research to treat blood cancers and in providing financial aid to patients and their family. Cleared for Independent Dispatch: ASM’s Rory Leslie Completes Precepting Phase

MANCHESTER – As of May 23, 2012, ASM’s Rory Leslie has been cleared by Eastern Connecticut Health Network medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that ASM serves.

His preceptors were Paramedic Supervisors Vinnie Maston and Beth Sheils. The full precepting phase can take ten to 12 weeks or more as the paramedic is prepped for the realities of the field. As with all precepting phases at ASM, Rory’s final approval came from ECHN after shadowing Rory and his preceptor (by proxy) in the field as they responded to emergency calls. Continue reading →

ASM Aetna Paramedics operate LifePak 15 cardiac-monitors

MANCHESTER — On May 17, 2012, ASM Paramedic Supervisor Robert O’Neil wirelessly transmitted a 12-lead EKG to Hartford Hospital in order to precipitate a field activation of the cardiac catheterization lab.

The transmission, which flows through a purpose-specific modem stored externally on the LifePak 15 cardiac monitor, draws the attention of the ED physician, interventionalist and cardiologist and most often results in the patient being conveyed from the field directly into the care of the cardiac staff in the cath lab.

This particular patient was in cardiogenic shock as partially manifested by bradycardia.

HARTFORD COURANT

MANCHESTER— Three people were taken away by ambulance after an accident on Tolland Turnpike Wednesday afternoon.

The injuries were non-life threatening, police said. Two vehicles had heavy front-end damage. Police traffic Sgt. Hank Minor said speeding and inattentive driving caused the accident. EAST HARTFORD — On April 6, 2012, Ambulance Service of Manchester (ASM) Paramedic Supervisor Beth Sheils and Paramedic Rory Leslie presented the basics of Emergency Medical Services to the Girls Scout Daisy Troop of East Hartford.

The presentation took place at the East Hartford Cultural Center where the girls (and one boy!) saw the ins and outs of the ambulance and learned about first aid, when to use 911 and growing up to be a Paramedic. SOUTHINGTON — Aetna’s David Noyes was featured under the heading People in the Community of the Southington Citizen – Record Journal.

The accompanying article reads: Children in the morning class at Plantsville Community Nursery School, 109 Church St., Plantsville had a visit from an Emergency Medical Technician, David Noyes, during “people in the community month”. Noyes gave children a tour of the ambulance and told them about what he does to help people who are sick or hurt.
